where were the children evacuated to?
Most children from London were sent to areas such as Cornwall, Devon and Wales to live with a new family known as their 'host' family. Where the children were going to stay was arranged before they got their but this did not always go to plan, meaning that sometimes the children were lined up and the local people would choose what children to take. The children traveled to their new homes on special trains. Although the journey was often long, for some of the children the journey was exciting. Most of the children felt sad to be leaving their home and families. A label containing the child's name, home address, school and where they were going was pinned to their coats. Each of the children carried a gas mask, food and a small bag for washing things. The children made friends with and went to school with local children. |
